According to Ayurveda, every human being is a unique phenomenon of cosmic consciousness.  Each human being has a temperament that falls into one of three Dasha (humors).  The three Dashas or  Tridashas are:  Vata ( ether plus air), Pitta ( fire plus water), and Kapha (water plus earth).  The human internal environment is constantly reacting to the external environment.  Knowing about  Panchakarma helps individuals balance their diet, habits, exercise and lifestyle tailored for each persons’ Dasha.

As the name suggests, Pancha in Sanskrit stands for Five and Karma relates to the therapeutic measures; therefore Panchakarma means five types of therapeutic measures. These are undertaken for the purification of the body and Ayurveda considers it necessary before the start of any other treatment. The logic being that as a cloth requires purification (removal of impurities and dust) before its permeated with a new colour, similarly the body requires purification before it imbues new colors of youthfulness, health and vigor. In fact, most of the time, Panchakarma is the end in itself rather than a prelude to other therapeutic measures.

The Panchakarma therapy of Ayurveda is comprised of five basic types of advanced treatment which evacuate the vitiated Dosha (toxic materials) from the body. One can consider this as a complete body de-tox program. There are many subtypes incorporated in this therapy: different types of herbal massages (Snehana / Abhyangam); fomentation’s using steam & herbs (Swedana); Vamana (emesis through herbs); Virechana (purgation through herbs); Nasya (nasal administration of oils); Basti (medicated enemas). These practices are extremely helpful in eliminating the cause of deep seated diseases; alongside benefiting & maintaining both physical and mental health.

Mainly Ayurveda concentrates on a healthy holistic lifestyle, focusing on the peaceful balance of mind, body and spirit. As we’re all aware, the modern lifestyle ensures we forget our real needs (pertaining to mind, body and spirit). Hence many diseases and imbalances begin to manifest such as Diabetes, Obesity, Arthritis, Cancer, Heart Disease & other various Allergies. These are all common place in today’s societies, eventually killing the person both mentally & physically.
